Morro Bay got its
name from Morro Rock. In 1542 Juan Cabrillo sited and named the
rock and dubbing it "The Gibralter of the Pacific. Rising 576
feet from the ocean it is one of nine extinct volcanos called
the Nine Sisters which run in a straight line for 12 miles and
are approximately 21 million years old. Chumash Indians
originally settled in the area and still reside here.
In the 1580's Spanish galleons sailing the
coastal waters put into Morro Bay and in 1587 Captain Pedro de
Unamuno claimed the land for Spain.
1000's of acres of land grants were made
when Mexico ruled California. The nearest railway was hundreds
of miles away and so the cattle and dairy ranches (ranchos)
depended on transportation from the sea.
In the 1870's a man by the name of Riley
homesteaded 160 acres and built the first house in Morro Bay. In
1883 he founded the town and built a wharf.
